I work as an order processing clerk, and my company decided to change the hours of everyone in my department. All of us have to work four days a week for ten hours a day, and then we have the rest of the week off. It wouldn’t be too bad if I had gotten Monday or Friday, but I got stuck with Tuesdays.
At first, I used the time to run errands and do some shopping. It was rather fun, but that feeling soon wore off. I can only shop so much, and it turns out it isn’t quite as fun when you don’t have a lot of money to spend or a friend to go along. I looked for some new clubs to join, but there didn’t seem to be anything that interested me until I saw an advertisement for the Tuesday matinee movie at the local theater.
It turns out that they are first run movies, but the theater charges less just to get some customers in the door. I liked the movie they would be playing, so I decided to give it a try. The theater was almost empty when I arrived, but it seems there are regulars who meet there all the time.
The man nearest me introduced himself and all the others. He said they met there on Tuesdays because it was a good way to afford a movie while avoiding the crowds. Some of them were retired, and others simply had time off from work. He asked for my first name only, and he explained it wasn’t a formal group of any type. They went out for coffee after the movie to discuss it, and I was invited along if I wanted to become part of their group. I accepted, and we’ve been meeting every Tuesday since.
